Seniors, after Tuesday's (11/14) Scholarship Workshop at Lunch, you can drop-in to the College and Career Center (Room 332) to get help with you college and/or financial aid applications any time between 11:30 am and 8:00 pm.  On Wednesday (11/15), you can participate in the LHS College/Financial Aid Application SWARM during the school day with permission from your teachers.  At SWARM, College Advisors from all over LBUSD will be "swarming" to Lakewood to help you with your applications.  The SWARM pass is attached below.  Remember to bring the pass with the signatures of your teachers.  If you participate in either event, you will be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship.

The 46th annual College and Career Night at the CSULB Pyramid will be November 1st from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm.  This is your chance to meet and interact with college representatives from around the country and job/career representatives from our local area. As always, the event and parking are free and all are welcome.  Seniors, if you bring confirmation pages from your completed financial aid or college applications, you'll get to spin the "Wheel of Prizes" at the event for each confirmation you bring!  Stop by the College and Career Center or the College Advisors' Offices for more information.

Starting this week all high school students and their parents in the Long Beach Unified School District will receive customized College Readiness Guides.  The guides – based upon each student’s course history, grade point average, test scores and other factors – provide an overview of readiness for various California public colleges and universities, along with suggested next steps for students and parents. The aim of the seven-page reports is to take the mystery out of college preparation.  The guides were created with feedback from parents who wanted practical, “how-to” information on college readiness. View a sample guide. Students will be able to view their own reports online in their StudentVUE portal.  Parents can review their children’s reports in the ParentVUE portal. 

 

Join us on Tuesday, October 17th at 6:00 pm in the Lakewood High School Library for a Parent Workshop on How to Use Your College Readiness Guide.  Our College Counseling Team will be ready to answer your questions and to walk you through these how-to information guides.

 

PTSA meeting will follow at 7:00 pm.

Seniors, the Local Scholarship Application is now available.  With this one application, you will be eligible for more than 50 Lakewood and local scholarships that can be used at schools and training/certificate programs both inside and outside California.  Additionally, with the pieces of this application (academic resume, personal statement, letters of recommendation), you can also apply to other scholarships without doing additional work.  The application is do in the College and Career Center (Room 332) by Friday, November 3rd.

If you are interested in sports medicine, emergency medicine, kinesiology, physical therapy, or any aspect of the medical field, the Sports Medicine Mentor Camp would be a good fit for you. During your 2-day FREE camp (which includes pizza), you will be provided the basic knowledge of sports medicine including CPR and first aid, injury recognition and rehabilitation, college sports medicine options and careers in sports medicine, and a whole lot more. At the end of the two days, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation and a CPR and First Aid Certification.  You can choose from two camps:  Camp 1 (Saturday, July 15th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday July, 16th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm) or Camp 2 (Saturday, July 22nd from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, July 23rd from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm).  Both camps will be taking place at the Mira Costa High School Cafeteria (1401 Artesia Boulevard, Manhattan Beach).  For more information and to register click on the link below.

Two-year and four-year colleges and universities will be represented at the LBUSD WRAP College & Career Fair at Admiral Kidd Park (2125 Santa Fe Avenue, Long Beach) on Saturday, April 8th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Backpacks and school supplies will be given out for the first 100 students at the fair.  At the fair, you'll also find PRIZES, a Parent Corner with parent resources, a Kid Zone with lots of fun activities, Food Trucks, and representatives from LBUSD, the City of Long Beach, and many community organizations.  For more information, contact the WRAP Office at (562) 498-2324.

Orange Coast College will be hosting a Financial Aid event on Saturday, April 15th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event is FREE and there will be plenty of fun activities that day for the entire family including a photo booth, face painting, bounce houses, and more. The event will take place in the Orange Coast College Main Quad located by the Student Center. There is no need to register for the event but there will be a check-in table to receive raffle tickets and free food vouchers for the event.

 

Seniors, if have not started or not yet completed your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the staff at OCC would love to help you regardless of what school you plan to attend in the Fall. If you have any questions about financial aid, then this a great opportunity for students and families to get answers from the OCC Financial Aid Department Staff and have fun at the same time.

The Larry Acterman Public Education Award is for Seniors interested in teaching public school. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a high school senior graduating from the Long Beach Unified School District
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be admitted to a four-year public college or university in the state of California and enrolled full-time with intention of completing a degree and a teaching credential
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment and interest in pursuing a career in public education as a K-12 public school teacher in California
  • Demonstrate outstanding scholastic ability, and a determination to graduate from college and become a public school teacher.

The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, Tobacco Education Program is proud to announce that they are officially accepting applications for the 2017 Healthy Long Beach Youth Leadership Program!

 

The Healthy LB Youth Leadership program is a 3 month program designed to give high school students unique opportunities for leadership building and capacity to promote both positive change on an individual and community level.

 

The program will help youth to:

  1. Explore issues, concerns, and activities affecting youth
  2. Develop their leadership skills
  3. Make a positive impact in the future of Long Beach
  4. Learn how to create a marketing campaign
  5. Build their resume

The program will be starting in March and will go through May.  Interested high school students need to fill out an application to be accepted into the program and submit it no later than 5pm on March 16th, 2017.  No prior experience is necessary to join, just the interest to collaborate and get involved!

The University of Southern California is pleased to announce the creation of USC Bovard Scholars, a new program which aims to help high-achieving juniors with financial need gain admission to and succeed at the nation’s top universities. 

 

USC Bovard Scholars will receive FREE admission and financial aid guidance, comprehensive test preparation, personalized career exploration, as well as leadership development opportunities. The program includes an intensive, three-week residential experience during the summer on the USC campus and personal coaching throughout the college application and decision-making process, all at no cost to the student.  Scholars will engage with guest speakers, industry experts, career specialists and recent college graduates to define their personal pathway to college and beyond.

 

The summer program is set to run July 16th – August 5th.   The program application is now open for the pilot year.  The application due date is February 17th.  All interested juniors are encouraged to apply.  Space in the program is limited.  For more information, visit the link below.

The Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) is a free, three week, summer program, for youth ages 14 to 17, that promotes positive leadership and personal development skills that young people can use in their daily lives. Along with Juvenile Investigations, Detectives, guest speakers from community organizations, business leaders, and other government agencies, facilitate YLA. Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 is the deadline to complete FAFSA or the Dream Act application! You MUST submit a financial aid application if you want to receive any money from the federal or state government for your college education.  Most of the money from your college and even outside scholarships are also tied to the FAFSA or Dream Act Application. Named for the first African American to walk in space, the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships are available to for two male and two female seniors.  $5,000 each will be awarded on behalf of the former NASA astronaut, physician, and businessman, Dr. Bernard Harris.  Deadline for submissions is April 10, 2017

 

To be eligible for the scholarship, seniors must have a minimum 3.0 unweighted grade point average, be African American or Hispanic, and have been accepted as a full-time student at a four-year institution of higher education.

Paul McClaughry - Matt Doyle Scholarships

 

The Kiwanis Club of Long Beach will be awarding six deserving seniors with scholarships. The Paul McClaughry–Matt Doyle Scholarships were established to support and build vocational goals and community service among Long Beach area youth and recognize the demonstrated evidence of outstanding service and leadership in their school, community and church.

 

Each of the six seniors chosen will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE - To be considered for a scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be a graduating high school senior who has applied for admission to an accredited two- or four-year college, university, technical school or post-high school program.
  • Applicant must maintain a cumulative un-weighted GPA of at least 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) throughout your high school career.
  • Applicant must attend school in the LBUSD or in an accredited high school in the City of Long Beach, CA. 
  • Applicant must have participated in community/volunteer activities.

 

HOW TO APPLY

  • Applications are available in the College and Career Center or by email request to KiwanisLB@aol.com, subject line SCHOLARSHIP.
  • Applications must be received by the Kiwanis Club of Long Beach by April 28, 2017. There will be no exceptions.

Eligibility Requirements for the Cubberley PTA Scholarship

  1. Graduating senior of any LBUSD high school.
  2. Graduate of Cubberley School, attending a minimum of 3 years.
  3. Parent or guardian is a current member of any PTA or PTSA - must provide a copy of current PTA membership card. Parent or guardian must have applied for PTA membership by December 1st.
  4. Overall high school GPA of 2.5 or higher, no citizenship U's on most current high school report card - must provide a copy of most current high school report card.
  5. Essay required - In 500 words or less, describe your professional aspirations and career goals.  Include how your academic program and your overall educational plans will assist you in your goals.  Attach typed essay to the application.
  6. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, April 28, 2017. Late applicants will not be considered.

Juniors and Seniors:  The 48th Annual Eve & Gene Black Summer Medical Career Program sponsored by the Los Angeles Pediatric Society is a medical mentorship/internship program.

  • Applicants must be in 11th or 12th grade when filling out the application
  • Under the supervision of a medical facility coordinator, selected participants shadow various medical professionals (nurse, nutritionist, pharmacist, lab technician and/or physician)
  • Most involved medical facilities run their programs Monday – Friday, about 8 hours a day, no nights or weekends; exact hours are determined by each medical facility coordinator
  • If selected, participants are responsible for their own transportation
  • If a financial need exists, a participant may request a stipend
