Meet Mrs. Acuna.  Mrs. Acuna has a  Bachelors Degee  from  CSULB in  Spanish & Speech Communications. She also has a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction from Concordia University. When asked   when she knew she wanted to be a teacher, she replied, "When my mom told me in high school that I should be a Spanish teacher, I told her she was crazy. After studying abroad in Spain and traveling through Europe, I fell into teaching by accident, but it has been the best thing to happen to me. I am so fortunate that I get to share my love and passion for language, culture and travel with amazing students who inspire me every day."

Meet Ms. Jordan.  Ms. Jordan studied English at CSU Long Beach.  She teaches Accelerated English to our 10th grade Merit students.  When  she's not grading papers or essays,  she enjoys traveling, gardening, cooking, and of course, reading.


Meet Mr. West  Mr. West has been teaching at Lakewood High School for 24 years. He is our Merit Scholars Biology and Accelerated Biology teacher.  Mr. West has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obisbo (SLO) and a  Master's degree  in Education from Grand Canyon University, AZ.  Mr. West's interests other than Science are muscle cars, electronics and bonsai plants.

Meet Mr. Vitale-  Mr. Vitale started working at Lakewood High School in January of 1990. He has taught grades 9 through 12 there, specifically English, Journalism, accelerated, honors, and for many years, AP Language and Composition while serving as English Department Chair for over twenty years.

Meet the Merit Teachers

Meet the Merit Scholars' Lead Teacher, Mrs. McDaniel. Mrs. McDaniel teaches AP Spanish Language and Culture and Merit 101, a 9th grade pre-AP study skills elective course.  Mrs. McDaniel has only been teaching at Lakewood High School for 3 years, but she is a long time Lancer, graduating from LHS in 1988! She went on to graduate from CSULB with a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Chicano and Bilingual Studies. She also has a Master's degree from the University of La Verne in School Counseling. In her free time, she loves to camp and travel to Spanish Speaking countries with her family. 

Meet Mr. de la Loza. Mr de la Loza attended Cal State Long Beach where he obtained his degree in Chemistry. He took a few years of to travel "Where no man has gone before" before finally deciding on a career in education. He currently serves as advisor to the class of 2019, Merit Scholars Student Club and Dead Chemist Society. This year, he is teaching AP and Honors Chemistry. 



Meet Ms. Magaña, Merit Scholar's Little Stick of Dynamite!

Ms. Magaña graduated from CSU Long Beach with a BA in Comparative Literature. This is her 14th year teaching at LHS. She is teaching  AP Seminar and AP Research, helping students earn their AP Capstone Diploma. She is also  an Academic Decathlon Coach AND the One World Club Sponsor. When not teaching, she loves to travel, attend U2 concerts!  

Meet the Captain!  Capt. McMackin, who has been teaching at LHS for 5 years now, is our Naval Science and  Naval Drill Instructor.  He is a retired Navy Captain (Nuclear Power & Expeditionary Warfare), a community volunteer, Eagle Scout, and even a former politician (Bellflower School Board). When he's not leading our JROTC students on campus, you might find him on his  bicycle or watching a Giants game. From this photo, I think it's safe to say that he is also a world traveler!

Meet Mrs. Busch.  She graduated from UCLA with a BA in  Psychology with a  Business Administration Specialization. She also  graduated from Pepperdine University with a MA in Clinical Psychology. When asked to tell us a little about herself, Mrs. Busch says, " I am a 1986 graduate of Lakewood High School and current AP Psychology teacher and Girls Athletic Director. I have also coached multiple sports over 26 seasons, most notably Girls and Boys Tennis who earned 6 Moore League Championships. My husband is also a graduate of and teacher at Lakewood HS and our daughter recently graduated in 2017. Go Big Red!"


Meet Mrs. Lurie Mrs. Lurie teaches AP Literature and Composition and Film Analysis. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University and has worked for Long Beach Unified since 1998. She has her M.S. and has taught courses at both LBCC and Cal State Long Beach. Mrs. Lurie was one of the first teachers in LBUSD to earn National Board Certification and renewed it in 2015. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, traveling, and quilting. She spent time last summer in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin visiting the sights and gathering information to bring back to her classroom.
